Hymn to the Ancients Down past salt foam coral sea, Down past its desert, Tear formed it ran down their cheeks ‘til what was left preserved Rage typhoon, wipe all their tracks Keep all their secrets ‘til sage and Sybil come back To dance on the high cliffs
2.
Raccoon 02:41
Raccoon On the August morning when We took the tubes and floated down Where the river runs so deep No on e but us in our bare feet No one but us in our bare feet No one but us in our bare feet … While we floated on our backs We the raccoon in a trap He stared at us and yanked the chain We thought we’d better wander back We wandered back but he was gone We wandered back but he was gone … Saw a path between the trees And walked until we saw debris And rusted cans all strewn about The shack was in tar paper black The shack was in tar paper black … The old man’s gun looked threatening I looked at him, he looked at me I said “Hey there’s a raccoon in your trap” He spit and said “Well, how ‘bout that?” Take it to heaven Oh Mercy One Take it to heaven Oh Mercy One …

Still Life 02:53
Still Life Toys are scattered on the floor ice is seeping through the door garbage heaped and spilling grease dishes in the sink for weeks and don’t I care? It’s my still life made with careless care my still life Postman drops the letters in I bathe away my last night’s sin and drop the towel on the floor coffee’s hot, I’ll have some more and don’t I care? It’s my still life made with careless care my still life
4.
Blue Kitchen 03:48
Blue Kitchen You – a young girl when I set out on my own I was carrying another to be born, my baby girl Sky blue paint and dishes from the Woolworth store hear that crazy pit bull’s toenails on the floor? Do you remember how we used to dine in humble luxury there in the kitchen you and me? The bus would drop you two blocks away I got my pencils every time you came – you were thirteen I sketched you sitting by your friend Christine on linoleum worn to a faded green in sunshine streams that did a dance in patterns on the wall there around your shadows six feet tall
5.
Been A Fool 02:45
Been a fool I must be a fool, I‘ve been lied to so long Can’t look at a man and see what’s right or what’s wrong I gave all my love It’s been thrown away But he’s only postponing it for another day for another day Stop all the stories – they’ve quit being unique I just can’t freeze here, and thaw out next week It’s been a rough day I don’t want to be alone I reach out to call you and find nobody home nobody home I’ve been going down some real funny roads but the things I’m not laughing at are what I’ve been told I tried to be good done my Sunday School but each time I turn around I see I am just a fool I am just a fool
6.
All My Life 02:55
All My Life All my life, I’ve seen the sadness come and I have seen the sadness go Down the road, under the wire fence across the field, the junk cars rest down tall grasses, they sit abandoned for the wilderness with their fenders bent, and their windshields cracked A hundred blackbirds fly like a cloud of one to see, and then go back Deep within, the silence of your soul time is nothing less or more than just a constant breathing in and out to free a delicate sigh Somewhere the steam is rising from your morning bath and your suitcases are packed but here, the forest quivers in the sun in fractured light upon the grass As the crows strut, and peck the pebbles up your daylight comes b’tween the curtainsa and lays in a beam across the rug So constant how the sighs of time like bellows blow the embers in the heart in and out, I’ve seen the sadness come and I have seen the sadness go

He Got the Carrot He got the carrot
8.
The Daughters Their daughters they lost on the way to the Temple Now only the wise man could sing … and what could he tell them in melodic sentence? How could allegiance he bring? So far away now the daughters had wandered The followed a much different tune So while the wise man encouraged his subjects they all ran away with the moon How is it that they could not fit together the truths of their unified souls? But find in its place, the lure of the contents the conquest of the black holes Somewhere in-between lies the answer they search for It never took right or left turn But stayed on the road that neither could stay on and knelt down among the tall ferns
9.
Marshfield Girl The fog was lifting from the bogs and the rills Hovering and floating on the sides of the hills Down in the marshes, a girl wades through the mud telling the blackbirds about the things she loves All about a dream that slipped away leaving only a dangling facade The scent of the lilacs hung in the air She put a wasp nest on top of her hair and started to tight rope on a web that was there tiptoeing past the footprints of her secrets Balancing on top of the world there goes the Marshfield Girl Yes, she can remember the edge of her dreams How easily they slip away She stands at the edge of a precipice and soon the Sandhill cranes are floating past the crescent moon Their eyes are soft with ecstacy floating up and down so free Balancing on top of the world there goes the Marshfield Girl
10.
Camel in the Needle’s Eye It’s never been any different inside The darkness and the light, it still resides A glint of your eye, a crease on your face exaggerate what you think of this place … a little more convinced Something brave shakes through your skin when the fright of what lies ahead begins The leaves blowing in the backyard you rent make me think of the yard light on the broken barn and fence … a little more naïve Couldn’t we have it just the way that makes sense? What’s the trick? The camel in the needle’s eye just winks as it walks through and all that’s left’s a footprint … oh, oh …
11.
Nashwauk 03:00
Nashwauk When we got to Nashwauk the wind blew the cottonwood trees ‘round the painted ponies and corncribs standing in the morning breeze The beauty was so strong it made you cry We stood upon the car hood We had no place to go that couldn’t be driven in two days or maybe three I could smell the sunlight on the screens
12.
The Bright Side Look on the bright side we can’t go back We’re on a one way direction track You stood and you said that you knew me but you never knew that I only wanted you When you find where your confidence hides out let me know just for curiosity Think of the money we never had It comes in handy to excuse the bad luck and we both had our share, didn’t we? When I think of what it was, it’s not clear but the tide changes all that it washes We both got washed out before we could see I stand with my sleeves up beside the sink The foam on my fingers runs down my cheeks and I can’t even tell what the difference is from the foam and the tears running from my eyes When I see you sometime by happenstance we won’t mention the worst thing was – we never tried
13.

about

Thea Ennen Wisconsin

I sing and write to make a sense of my existence - my place in this world. Each song is a specific journey down a road. They are my magic carpets to see again a memory or expectation. I use songs - melodies and words - to guide me, like a rudder through the waters of life. .

I think I sing in public to reassure this kind of journey- to never lose touch with what is instinctual.
