Trouble in the Town

Trouble in the Town
Come walk with me around the town
We’ll be quiet – hardly make a sound
We’ll step softly – don’t break the eggs
‘cuz something’s going on around this place
It’s hard to recognize the human race –
A lot of round holes, a lot of square pegs
They can’t stand up but they won’t sit down -
flying their flags all around the town
Some of them left and some of them right -
looks like trouble in the town tonight
I always like to walk around with you
and see the signs that our neighbor’s use
It’s complicated to say the least
When people turn on their favorite news
before the story’s done it’s lit a fuse
Heed the warning – it might be the beast
They can’t stand up but they won’t sit down -
flying their flags all around the town
Some of them left and some of them right -
looks like trouble in the town tonight
Come walk with me around the town
We’ll be quiet – hardly make a sound
We’ll step softly – don’t break the eggs

Borrowed from the Wind

Borrowed from the Wind
Take my soul borrowed from the wind
let it out to spin a web
around the hollow bones
the pillars where we wept
Hear the winter sky
echo in the night
through the bare brittle bows
“Your love won’t die”
Take my brain
While it’s breathing still
shake it out to spill
on the gray frozen fields
Break the concrete cast
with the blowing grass
let the hills hear me sing
My love won’t die

Pirates of Zenith

Pirates of Zenith
Well there I was – lost adrift at sea
Beneath the stars, along the milky way
off in the distance a dark ship appeared
sailing on the first light of day
Crashing through the waves, the ship raised up its flag
a Skull and Crossbones – a Jolly Roger
The thieves of the sea were coming after me
It might be bad luck or good fortune - doo doo
The captain shouted out for me to grab the rope
He dropped it down across his stolen cargo
I knew I had no choice, something in his voice
made me climb aboard the Zenith for Key Largo
It happened so fast – I looked up at the mast –
saw a creature part boy and part parrot
The captain said to me “The parrot’s almost three,
and I am almost five – we’re brother pirates” - doo doo
The Pirates of Zenith have stolen my heart
The captain took me down below to the loot that he had stole
blankets, pillows, shoes, and a golden trumpet
The parrot flew up top – threw something to the sharks
that swam along the living room carpet
“Well look out! Thar she blows!” A gale force wind arose
The captain said to batten down the hatches
He steered the Zenith south, though the ship was just a couch
I’m sailing with the Pirates of Zenith
The Pirates of Zenith have stolen my heart

Better Things

Better Things
Any day now you’re gonna move on to better things
It won’t be long
Any day now you’re gonna move on to better things
It won’t be long
Life is hard now; your heart is broken and it can
seem like nothing good is coming your way
I know – I’ve been there, I’ve not forgotten
how the dark days keep coming - It’s hard to be brave
But any day now you’re gonna move on to better things
It won’t be long
You’re swimming upstream against a current
You’re all worn out now, but don’t bite the hook
I love your stories, the way you tell them
It’s a real-life adventure
You could write a book
Any day now you’re gonna move on to better things
It won’t be long

Zero Objection

Zero Objection
You could blame the poor – Mr. Thompson does
When poor kids miss out school
just take away their funds
Their mama should’ve thought about it
‘cause Charles Darwin says it goes like that
persuaded by zero objection
Bail out the bankers hurt
in the savings and loan
Wouldn’t want to see them lose their prestigious home
They stand for all the things we love
Those in line for food don’t have enough clout – it’s
persuaded by zero objection
The children pay for the sins of their fathers before
Especially if your mama don’t live
with your daddy no more
Take all the tears and irrigate
all the gardens on the wealthy estate - it’s
persuaded by zero objection

Paralyzed

Paralyzed
He stood upon the porch-lit steps
The moths collected on the screen
He thought to pack for Carolina, but he stood there paralyzed
In August the corn grew higher than
he had predicted – now everything
would stay the same
No hard push from something too good
or bad - to leave
but nothing to stay for
Silhouetted fences and silos waiting
beneath the sky
He thought to pack for Carolina, but he just stood there paralyzed
The evening came full circle when
he thought to change the calendar
He saved a picture for -
a painting - a later change of pace
Inside a drawer he found a special place
He stood upon the porch-lit steps
The moths collected on the screen
He thought to pack for Carolina, but he stood there paralyzed

My Real Side

My Real Side
There was a time
I opened my eyes and the sky lit up
Somewhere in the night
Before I noticed that I was blind
Can you see my energy?
My real side?
I drifted up higher
To a world in an empty sky
Searching for you
Using my blinded eyes
Can you see my energy?
My real side?
Tumbling around I noticed
the world I was in was gone
Somebody’s dream
I must have stumbled on
Can you see my energy?
My real side?

You Put a Spell on Me

You Put a Spell On Me
You put a spell on me
You put a spell on me
You put a spell on me
I ‘ve been dreaming
I have been dreaming
I have been dreaming
I know I might seem to you
just a bother
You don’t want my love
I just don’t want any other
I still can’t help wanting you
Wish you would want me too
Move on
move on
Walk away a little more
Leave this empty dream
To fade away just like before
can’t break away from your eyes
I know they
I know they could
never lie
You put a spell on me
You put a spell on me
You put a spell on me
I ‘ve been dreaming
I have been dreaming
I have been dreaming
Dreaming

Thea Ennen Wisconsin
I sing and write to make a sense of my existence - my place in this world. Each song is a specific journey down a road.
They are my magic carpets to see again a memory or expectation. I use songs - melodies and words - to guide me, like a rudder through the waters of life. .
I think I sing in public to reassure this kind of journey- to never lose touch with what is instinctual.
